This was dinner last night with Bob and Ann and their friend, Suzanne from Australia.
I had a dinner which had been translated as Bean Paint with Cod. Still not sure what bean paint was. I thought they were going to be some kind of speckled bean. It was most tasty, heavily flavored with chorizo. The cod was somewhat over powered by the herbs and chorizo so it was wasted except for adding some protein.
Leaving Sahagun this morning was cold and very windy. Hold on to your hat. I had to chase my down twice before I got it secured.
I crossed the rio Cea on an old roman bridge. All the old bridges are all very pretty and sort of romantic. I can just see the maidens of old crossing them as they walk to a village or perhaps knights on their stallons off to war.
This little chapel, the Emita de Nuestra Soñora de Perales, outside of Bercianos del Real Camino, was open as I walked by. I can never resist going in for a prayer. In addition to my regular prayers, I had a special prayer today for my friend JoAnn Hepperman and her husband Ken, who is having surgery.
Today was a very maddening, confusing day. I came upon a sign that I couldn't figure out. It appeared that if I went to the left, I would eventually come to the town where I am staying. If I continued to the right I would miss it. But it wasn't clear. I didn't see such a choice when I looked at the map this morning. I eventually decided to go with the yellow arrows but I was not entirely comfortable with my decision. For a couple of hours, I kept doubting and rolling the decision around in my head, like I had a couple of worry beans up there. Finally, I put on my ear buds and listened to a book on tape. Hmmm, I can still worry and second guess AND listen to a good book. Finally I came to the only town on the way and saw El Burgo Ranero on the trail I was on. For about five minutes, my mood improved and I was a happy girl...gone were the head beans and I sent a "Thank You" upstairs. Well, wouldn't you know...I then come across a sign that says El Burgo Rancho is back the way I came. I wanted to tear my hair out. I could easily see this adding six or eight miles to my day. AAARRRG! I walked back a little ways and asked two ladies which way it was. Turns out there was a split in the road and I had missed the fork. The Camino had split in two for a distance that would have by-passed my town. Easy Peasy and no extra miles!
I always wish there was a sign by these memorials. Did he die on the Camino? How? And as Paul Havey might ask, "What is the rest of the story?"
Not sure what this was telling me but I decided it must be pointing me to my destination.
There are lots of artists and philosophers along the Camino
And after having to get directions, several times in the town of El Burgos Ranero...I finally found my home for the night. I am watching "El Cid" on my computer. I can watch for free on U-Tube. I didn't know you could do that. There are a bunch of old movies for free. "El Cid" takes place in this area. It has Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren. It is one of those epic Hollywood numbers and even has an intermission. When was the last time you went to a movie with an intermission? Some of the acting is not so good but it is filled with that old time Orchestra music that overwhelms the dialogue. I am thoroughly enjoying it. I must have seen it as a kid but I didn't remember much of it.
