Hawes to Keld 5/2/25

Good Morning all!

Thank goodness they put the truck photo on the sign, or I would have been nervous walking across it.  I am sure I have overeaten while on this hike, so how much was too much for the bridge?.

This was a rather gruesome sign.  Surely not!  Where is PETA when you need them?  It turns out that in Britain, “Cats Eyes Removed" road signs warn drivers that reflective road studs, called "cat's eyes,” have been temporarily removed, usually for roadworks or resurfacing. This means drivers must rely more on their headlights and surroundings to navigate the dark.

These two were newborns, still wobbly.

This is the first lamb I have seen of this color.  Biracial? He doesn’t look cowed by the bigger bully eying him/her.

We were practically eye to eye. I felt like this ewe was judging me, and I was left wanting.

Mountains in every direction.

Trail nearing the top of the first big mountain I had to assault this morning.

Almost to the summit.  Pant-Pant, Gasp-Gasp. I climbed up and up for more than three hours. There was that Rocky theme again.

This was atop the second smaller mountain.

A mirage? A miracle? A Diet Coke?  Finding a pub for a break is rare on the Pennine Way. Whoo hoo! I ordered a pint of Diet Coke with ice.  How we take the everyday things in life for granted unless we don’t have them.

So, my last big obstacle of the day.  It was very steep, and when I looked up from the bottom, I felt like I was looking up at the Empire State Building.  Tired legs, aching knees, etc.

A memorial to a walker who died at this spot.

The top!  I still had two miles to go, but it was downhill from here.

When you are tired, there is no more joyous sight in the world than your hotel at the end of a long hike. Today’s distance was a mere 13.5 miles, counting a few missteps. On this hike, the miles don’t make such a difference; it is how many severe ups and downs there are.  And so far, every day has maxed me out. It is a lovely hotel, and my room is charming, well-decorated, and inviting.

My dinner was Roast Chicken Breast ~ Crushed New Potatoes, topped with Bacon & Mushroom Sauce.  Scrumptious.  The chicken was fork-tender, and the potatoes were saturated with the wonderful sauce.  One of my favorite dishes on the Pennine Way - Michelin Star good.

Happy Derby tomorrow - Hope you have all winning horses!

Prayers for me because tomorrow is my longest day.

Good night and God Bless!
