Hawes Day Off 5/1/25

Good Morning!

Just a little laugh for the day.

God is good.  Finally, I am going to have clean clothes.  And I don’t have to wash them, not that there have been any self-service laundromats on the way.  I took everything I owned, and the wonderful woman washed, dried, and folded it for about 14 dollars U.S. Hallelujah and glory be.  I had hand-washed some things, but never thought that would get them very clean.

I went to the Dales Countryside Museum, which was fascinating.  It was a real history of the people and their lives.

"Early settlers in the Dales
lived by their own social rules.
From the 13th century, law and order were maintained by the vestry and
officials such as the village constable and the surveyor of highways.
Later, in the 16th century, houses of correction were set
up by Act of Parliament. Disorderlypeople,
beggars and trespassers were set to work and
supervised by an overseer.” I like the idea that begars and trespassers
 were set to work.

Early police.

Okay, Drama Committee, here is your next play.

And for my sister Sandi.  Scoot Around would be called a Tramper here.

There was an exhibition on the Pennine Trail.

Early walkers before cell phone maps.

There is a bakery across the street from my hotel.

So, at the bakery, I went for the Pork Pie for lunch.  I have always heard of them but had never eaten one. The first recorded one was 1390; evidently, they are common for Christmas. Britain is known for its meat pies. It was not much bigger than a cupcake and not quite as tall.  I wondered if I should get something else.  I didn’t finish it, so they are very filling. It was excellent.  The pork shoulder was somewhere between minced and ground.  The crust was flaky, and the whole thing was yummy. I have discovered these Original Yorkshire Flapjacks, which are a cookie or, as the Brits say, a biscuit. I have had a flapjack before, and it was meh, but these are heaven.  I bought eight of them, so I can pack one daily in my backpack.  It is too hot for chocolate. Oh, and by the way, I didn’t eat this with lunch - tomorrow on the trail.

After lunch, I went to a famous cheese factory. The recipe for the original cheese goes back 875 years.

We got a lesson on making cheese.

A tour of the factory

Cheese samples were provided, and we were allowed to eat all we wanted.  What is not to like about sampling exquisite cheese.  Then I went into the store and even more samples.  There must have been more than six types of cheddar alone. My favorite was a tie between the cranberry and the caramalized onion followed closely by the blue cheese.  There was pineapple, stemmed ginger, apricot, blue, several levels of smoked cheese, and so many more that I tried.

For all my knitter friends.

"These very special figures were
created by the Hawes Yarnbombers,
a group of six friends brought together
by their love of knitting!
In the summer and autumn of 2023, Wallace & Gromit.
along with their friends, appeared in the Market Place
here in Hawes.
Not only did they delight visitors to the town, but also
raised over £15.000 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance
through donations too!
The figures took seven months to create and were
made using 50 meters of chicken wire and more
than 15kg of yarn!
The Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheese Experience is
now their permanent home, which is handy as
Wallace is famously a huge fan of our cheese!"

Look at this tiny roadster. It had to be red!

I had the most fun dinner.  This is my new friend Allison from Australia.  She was a blast.  We talked books and everything else under the sun.  You see me with no makeup, bad hair, etc.  It is nice to be a bum on a hike.

I really wanted Indian food tonight, and I waited outside the Indian restaurant that was supposed to open at 6:00.  The head guy(?) said, “Oh, it will be at least half an hour.”  That did it for me. I  ended up in a pub where I sat next to Allison. I ordered the Chicken Madras, which came with rice and pappadum.  Totally worth not eating at the Indian Restaurant because Allison was so much fun.

This is the second blog page I have posted today.  Now I am caught up.

Good night and God Bless!
