Schwarzwaldalp to Grindelwald 6/18/24

Today was a beautiful hike with lots of flowing streams to provide music compliments of Mother Nature.

My first glacier sighting.

I had constant views of the Eiger and surrounding mountains.

How now brown cow!  She finally let me pass, but I had to stomp my foot at her.

The first half of the hike was straight up and up and up.  Whew!

A small avalanche in the distance.

I was ever so happy to have a break and a little caffeine to perk me up.

The snow is melting above, and many streams are engorged with frigid water barrelling down at a frightening speed. I would not like to try crossing one.

I am not writing much about the scenery because the photos are better than my words, and neither do the scenery justice.

My beautiful hotel - The Hotel Gletschergarten.  I was tired when I found my hotel hiking after a little over 12 miles. I had my own private balcony to sit outside and admire the spectacular mountain views.

There couldn't be a more scenic place for a church.

The first time that I have ever seen the organ pipes behind the pulpit.

My dinner menu

I started with some local ham - similar to country ham served with a jammy egg and fresh asparagus.

Then came a salad bar with straight from the garden  fresh ingredients.  I was already full.

My entree was tender veal cubes simmered in a rich gravy accompanied by fresh vegetables—squash and turnip cubes.  This was worthy of a Michelin star.  For already being full - I did myself proud.

I mean, dessert came with the meal, so I didn't want to offend the chef.  I managed most of it. This was a fresh apricot tart, and it was delectable.  Mmmmmmm!

As I was sitting on my balcony, I heard this giant roar and looked up to see an avalanche. I was surprised at how loud it was from that distance.

That ends my first day on the trail. I have a nasty blister, but I will live. So until tomorrow, goodnight and sweet dreams.
