Kandersteg Day Off 6/25/24

After a great night's sleep and a good breakfast of fresh croissants with brie cheese, I took the gondola up to Lake Oeschinen.  I was going to walk up to the lake but the trail was closed due to falling rocks.  What a magnificent day. I had such a good time.

After I exited the gondola, it was still about a mile to the lake. Lake Oeschinen was formed through a giant landslide. It is frozen for about five months of the year.

It is rare that you see a cow wandering around the dining area. Dogs yes and birds double yes but a cow?

The lake was absolutely gorgeous.

Three guys were daring each other to go into the water. I had already felt it with one toe and all I can say is "Polar Plunge."  I assumed that they were from somewhere like Denmark until I heard the blonde say he was from Florida.  He certainly doesn't take a dip in this kind of freezing water regularly.

The dark-haired hottie swam back and forth for about 15 minutes.  Brrrrrr.

Just so you know, I am really here in this beautiful place.

This was the best brat of all time, and the fries were exactly why people order them all the time in Switzerland. They are fried in something gosh awful but taste divine. I ate every single one of them. And the Sinalco is the Swiss version of Diet Coke. I liked it, maybe even better.

There were plenty of hotties here if you were a young girl on the prowl - all machoed up and bravely taking their turn in the cold water. Sometimes it is good to be a girl.

I wondered if there were fish in the lake. The black man is the first black person I have seen in Switzerland, which is rather surprising. I have seen lots of Indians (as in India), plenty of Japanese, and quite a few Americans. Fish in the lake include Arctic char and trout. Ice fishing is popular from January to March.

So many beautiful waterfalls.

I was able to go almost under this one. It is more significant than it looks in the photo.

If you look dead center at the slight dip in the rocks, you will see where I was supposed to summit yesterday. It is quite snowy and is closed from almost the base of the mountain.

Look who caught a fish.  It was a nice-sized one.

My favorite photo of the trip.  Look at the kitty whose name is Muffin.  See Dennis, I couda brought one of the babies.

There was a group of about fifty Scouts.  I asked one of the leaders what group they were, and he replied "Scouts from Italy."

You could rent a boat and paddle out into the lake.  Too bad Dennis wasn't here.  He could paddle me around.  Wouldn't that be romantic?

After about five hours and ten miles, it was time to head back to Kandersteg. I got back to my room and never even considered rain.  An hour and a half later it was pouring, thunder and lightening and wind.  Where did that come from? Mountain weather is crazy.

Tonight's menu

The starter course was like a Carrot Mousse. It was good but I like the lettuce with the vinagrette the most but I am a salad kiinda girl.  The bread with the herb flavored butter was sensational.  Admitted - I never met bread I didn't like.

I thought the potato dumplings were going to be like gnocchi but they were not quite the same.  I love gnocchi but these oblong potato noodles were scrumptious and the mushroom sauce and accompanying mushrooms were delicious.

The main course was similar to a vegetable parmesan.  The incredible fresh tomatoes sauce made it taste like eggplant parmesan (my absolute favorite Italian Dish) without the fried eggplant.  The pasta was also good and a nice accompaniment to the vegetable medalion.

The dessert was soft meringues in a citrus base with lemon sorbet in the middle.  It was accompanied by fresh fruit.  Divine  Just the right light touch to a very filling meal.

So I had a fabulous day, rain and all.  Tomorrow, I head for a new experience and a new hotel.

Good night and God Bless!
