Mürren Day Off 6/22/24

In this weather, you can barely see the mountain because of the low clouds. Mürren is in the Bernese Highlands of Switzerland and is 5,374 feet above sea level. It cannot be reached by public road. If I could actually see through the thick clouds, there are views of three towering mountains: Jungfrau, Eiger, and Mönch. Mürren has a year-round population of 450 but has 2,000 hotel beds.

These little towns are ski villages, and Mürren is famous for slalom racing. "The monument above says, "The object of a turn is to get around a given obstacle losing as little speed as possible.  Arnold Lunn sat the first modern slalom on the slopes of the Allmendhubel on January 21, 1922.  This stone was unveiled by Swiss slalom champion Erica Reymond-Hess and Dae Ryding whose slalom victory at Kitzbühil on January 22, 2022 was the first British win in more than half a century of World Cup racing."

More clouds cover the mountain views. And the rain begins.

And it rained...

and rained.  At least I got my laundry done.

I had cream of tomato soup for lunch.  It was delicious. It was not quite as rich with cream as some soups I have ordered, but I could taste the fresh tomatoes in every bite.

I loved this.  The tiny part you can't read says, "going downhill fast.” Ain't it the truth!

I think I know him.  He plays bridge.

The clouds are clearing a little bit.

I ate dinner at the hotel and this was my view from the window. Still cloudy.

My entree was "all Pizzaiola mit Tomaten, Oliven, Petersilie un Kapern mit Mozzarella translated as linguine with tomatoes, olives, basil and capers with fresh mozzarella on top (it looks like the scoop of ice cream on top).  It was good from the beginning but the more I ate, it got even better.

I loved the bread.  There were two triangles of this dark bread with all kinds of nuts and seeds. YUM!  I squirreled away the wheat bread for my backpack.  I was low on bread.

Oh, this was my first sighting of this mountain—one of the many things I should have seen today if not for the rain.

I am so glad that even though it was 8:00 p.m., I finally got to see the beautiful mountains.

My trail for tomorrow is closed due to severe snow and frigid temperatures.  The low is below freezing, and the high is 36 degrees.  Boohoo.  Now I have to take the train to my next destination where I will hopefully do some day hiking.  What a disappointment, but I am so glad to be on this trip, and I am still having a great time. I knew I was taking a chance with the weather this early but it is unusually cold and snowy and rainy.

Tomorrow's hotel is in the boonies, and I will not have internet access.

Goodnight to all!
