Kaikoura to Picton

We had the most wonderful breakfast at our hotel.  There must have been at least twelve cooked items.

This was the best part.  I don't normally like sweet rolls but they served crisp French pastries filled with custard and topped with toasted pecans.  OMG!

Beans with tomato sauce (or pork and beans in a cheap hotel) are common.  These were especially good.

We drove about two hours and stopped at this little place for lunch.  We split a fish and chips.

The fish was orange roughy, with a light tempura-type batter, and it was a good thing we split it.  It was huge and had enough fries for a family.  Even "always clean my plate," Dennis couldn't eat all the fries.

Lot of seagulls were flying about.  I watched a young girl of about twelve years pick up a fry to eat, and one of the birds swooped in and took it almost out of her mouth.  The look on her face was priceless.

Our abode for the night. It is a bed and breakfast, and we have a fabulous suite.  The owner used to own a restaurant, and his wife is a chef.  They already surprised us with a plate full of sweets.  Yum!  As I write this, I am enjoying a truffle.

We walked into the Picton town center for dinner.  Our host recommended this restaurant and got us a reservation.

Oxley's turned out to be the hot spot in town.  Dennis had pan-seared butterfish with a sage cream sauce.  I speared a bite, and it was delicious. I had a very healthy and tasty house salad.  I was feeling ever so pious, and then the seafood chowder which was so rich that I could stand my spoon up in it.  It was the best chowder I have ever had, bar none.  Chowder this good is made with real butter and heavy cream. Calories be damned.  It was worth every one of them.

On our walk home, I spotted this most unusual mailbox.  There must be a story.

So that is all I have to write for today.  Tomorrow is a beast of a hike.  Say a prayer for me!  Dennis is wisely taking a day off.
