Deanne & Chris Sara were our most gracious hosts at Church Hill. She is an unbelievable chef, and he is Mr. Personality. If you ever come to Stewart Island - you must stay here. We may come back just to stay with the Saras.
We had to take the rickety plane back. This is the cockpit of the tiny plane. Once again, our trusty pilot got us back to the mainland safely.
We landed on a grass runway! We then had the most beautiful drive through the Catlins Coast, with lots of up and down and curves! Dennis has been such a good driver that I think he should be given honorary citizenship.
We got to the lodge well before check-in, and our room was not ready, so we drove the short distance to McLean Falls, perhaps the best waterfall in Southland Region, McLean Falls, located on the Tautuku River in Catlins Conservation Park along the scenic Chaslands Highway, is 22 meters (72+ feet) high.
The trail leading to the falls is almost mystic, with a dark tunnel-like approach.
The Tautuku River.
The lower falls.
And the majestic upper falls.
Old trees and bushes line the walkway.
We stayed at the Whistling Frog Holiday Park in our own little bungalow. Dinner was at the receptionist check-in and bar. The restaurant closed at 6:30, so needless to say, we had an early dinner. We had a terrific salad and an equally scrumptious pizza.
I am sending this a day late because the internet service was almost non-existent. You will get today's post in just a few hours.
