We started out with the best intentions today, but the drive was so long that we never had a chance to hike. We were totally out in the boonies all day. We kept seeing signs that said 150 kilometers to the next petrol station, and they meant it.
Poor Dennis got off without his coffee, and finally, in the middle of nowhere, we spotted this mobile coffee stop. Miracle of Miracles!
Our next break was at Knight's Point.
A granite column commemorates the opening of this section of coastal highway in 1965.
We ate a picnic lunch with this incredible view.
Our first views of Lake Wanaka took our breath away.
The lake was this blue. Wow!
Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea were created by the growth of the great glacial systems, which extended down from the Southern Alps to fill the valley and carve out the valley floor. The ice flows of Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea were connected through a pass which the main road to the west coast now runs through.
The sign to our hotel.
We had a nice Chinese dinner and walked back to our hotel. Two nights! Hiking tomorrow. Until then - happy trails and sweet dreams.
