Christchurch to Middle of Nowhere

On our first day on the road, Dennis had his first experience of driving on the wrong side.  He did pretty well, except he kept getting too close to rocks and walls and structures on my side of the car.  I admit that a few times I was a bit nervous but with my expert help (isn't that what wives are for?), we have no scratches or dents on the rental car.

We stopped for lunch at a cafe in Cheviot. I had a yummy panini with smoked turkey and brie cheese with cranberry salad on top.  It was a really good combination.  The cafe was across from the beautiful Knox Church, which opened in 1952. The church was built with stones collected by parishioners. Working bees were held to wash each one individually.

The inside smelled strongly of cedar which is a smell that I love.

The scenery here, a combination of mountain and ocean is incredible.

This tunnel scared the hell out of me.  Not because I am afraid of tunnels but because we were awfully close to the rock wall on my side.

We saw so many flowers.  I could identify most of them, but this one had me flummoxed.

We walked around Kaikoura for an hour or so. We thought our hotel was in Kaidoura but we had overshot the hotel's location by about 40 miles.  Oops, we should have read closer.  Our car has a GPS, and we should have used it.

Our "hotel" was a little cabin in the middle of nowhere but close to tomorrow's hike.  There was no internet.

Our dinner was really good.  Our hostess cooked it, and then I heated it up.  We started with a salad with all sorts of vegetables and nuts.  It also had roasted kumara (like a small sweet potato) and avocado.

Then we had chicken cooked in olive oil with dates, onions, and oranges. Excellent!

We also had homemade potatoes au gratin. What is not to like about potatoes, butter, cream, and cheese. Our dessert was lemon panna cotta, light as a feather, and a little tart. Just the way it should be.  We had enough for four people, and we did ourselves proud.

So it was off to bed feeling fat and sassy.  Well, maybe not sassy; we were pretty tired.

Until tomorrow.
