What a wonderful day we had. We hiked a trail named "Call of the Canyon." The trailhead was fairly high up and it was 28 degrees as we began our day. We were dressed warm with shirts, wool base layers and down jackets. I had gloves but Dennis forgot to bring his from Louisville. Bad move, D!
Just as we were getting on the trail, we noticed a guy with a Green Bay Packer hat. Dennis struck up a conversation and discovered they were both from Racine and had gone to the same high school. They even knew some of the same people. Small world!
We saw many icicles hanging from rocks. We were careful not to walk under those frozen missiles.
We crossed eighteen streams, most of which were either solid ice or mushy ice. It was a footing challenge. AND like two dummies, it was the first time we didn't bring hiking poles.
The trails were well maintained and not too steep, the real challenge was the streams.
As always, beautiful scenery.
I managed to stay dry but Dennis slipped and got one foot and his hand submerged in the icy water. Brrrrr! There were either rocks or logs to balance on for getting across the flowing streams. I don't know why but it seems that long legged, very fit men set up these skipping stones. They are always too far apart for my short legs.
We found this enormous rock to climb up on for a sandwich lunch. And our rock was in the sun. The hike ended up at about eight miles. A nice little day in the wilderness.
Dinner was at the 89 Steakhouse. We sat at the bar. We started with grilled bruschetta and split a kale salad with honeyed pecans. I had roadkill chicken (actually it was spatchcocked but it was flattened like roadkill) and these terrific buttery mashed potatoes. Dennis had a filet mignon with the same mashed potatoes. An excellent meal accompanied by several glasses of wine,a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc for me and California red blend for Dennis.
Sounds fun
