Buena sera!
Here is a quiz for you. Does anyone know what this is? It is how to flush the toilet. You don't push it, you turn it, and as long as you don't turn it back, the water keeps running. I thought I had seen every toilet possibility, but this was a new one.
Aren't they a fine pair?
My travel papers suggested I take a bus out of town to cut down on some of the long pavement. I took a 20-minute bus ride to Belgioiosa. These are the old walls of the city. I stopped at a bar across from it ad had my morning caffeine - Coke Zero. I went into the church, which was lovely, but it took so long to download my photos that I have a much prettier church for you to see later.
Check this house out. I have never seen anything like this in Europe. What were they thinking?
Some of today looked like this. Some of it also looked like plain ol' blacktop. It was like walking across a well-seasoned cast iron skillet. I was pretty fried when I finally got to some shade. I am getting a terrible farmer's tan. It doesn't matter how much sunscreen I use; I still get those lovely golf or teeshirt arms and a redneck. Well, some of that redneck is natural.
I didn't walk through this town, but I did find a bench in the shade for lunch. I swear Italy has a law that all benches are in direct sunlight. I had purchased a speck, creamed brie, and cranberry jam sandwich. It was delicious for a prepacked sandwich.
Look at this little kid climbing playground!
Sunflowers are far as the eye can see.
Isn't it cute? Just a baby. This photo is for Pami Green Lesley.
When I got to Santa Crista, I had to wait almost two and a half hours for my transport to my hotel, which was located well off the trail, so I went to a bar and drank two Coke Zeros, ate a Magnum ice cream bar, and still had 45 minutes to go. I finally decided to go to the church. It was boring on the outside but look at the interior.
I almost gasped; I was so shocked at how gorgeous the inside was. Never judge a book by its cover.
It was stunningly beautiful!
This is my trail for the next few days. Tomorrow is supposed to be 39 kilometers. That is a shocking 28.6 miles in 99-degree heat. I was supposed to take a boat down the river, which is a rite of passage, but the river is too low. Boohoo! I don't know how it is going to work tomorrow. I know I am going with the luggage, but I don't know how far. I only like surprises if they involve diamonds or ice cream. I do know that I am not waking 29 miles.
My beautiful resort hotel, Casina Cortesa, with lousy internet but worth the weak signal.
This dinner was incredible. I started with a slice of bacon pizza. What a glorious combination. Anyone who knows me knows I am like that beggin' dog on TV. "Bacon, bacon, bacon." And the owner brought me a whole jug of wine. I didn't finish it, or I wouldn't be writing this.
Then I had this razor-thin ham over a fresh fig. If you have never had a fresh fig, they taste like the world's best peaches. I hate figs otherwise.
Sausage and mushroom risotto - a combination worthy of the Gods. This was rich and buttery and simmered for hours. Believe it or not, I passed on the main course. Who could eat an even bigger course? Well, I know men who could, but not me.
I didn't pass on dessert. One was semi-fredo, the middle was a puddingy cake with cocoa, and the closest was a coffee gelato. I don't even like coffee, and I loved this -loved all of them. This was indeed a world-class chef.
So I waddled back to my room - a happy camper! Goodnight all.
